Al has had a varied business career.  He received his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of California at Berkeley where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.  He received his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1959.  He is an inactive member of the California Bar Association, and has held licenses as a real estate broker and a general contractor in California.  He has practiced law in Los Angeles and New York City, and has conducted business in eighteen foreign countries.  He has been an executive and general counsel of several corporations, the founding member of a law firm, a commercial real estate developer, and the chairman of the board of directors of the largest ice manufacturing plant and cold storage facility in the Rocky Mountain area.  He has been an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association where he served on panels hearing multi-million dollar cases concerning real estate and construction.

Al has been very active in the Aspen community since arriving twenty years ago.  He is the Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he also serves as the Planned Giving Consultant.  He is a management consultant to non-profit organizations and trainer for the Executive Service Corps sponsored by the Aspen Valley Community Foundation.  He is a member of the Aspen Rotary Club where he serves on the Board of Directors.  He has been Chairman of the Aspen Institute’s Community Forum, a member of the Board of Trustees of The Aspen Institute, the Chairman of the Board and President of the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, the Chairman of the Board of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, Vice Chairman of the Colorado chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and a member of the Board of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Al and his wife Germaine are both storytellers, and together they run Spellbinders, an international organization that trains volunteers to tell stories to children.  In 2000, he was the recipient of the Greg Mace Award for his service to the community.  An avid skier, hiker, and fly fisherman, he lives on the banks of the Roaring Fork River where he looks longingly at the trout and is teaching his grandchildren how to fish.
